My research involves studies of epithelial transport physiology. These include: 1) action of Crotalus (rattlesnake) venom and its constituent neurotoxic components on active and passive Na and Cl transport systems; 2) influence of cations, especially Na+ energetic adequacy of organic solute transport; and 3) transport of anions across gastro-intestinal mucosa. The general goals of these studies are: 1) to elucidate the general principles of membrane physiology as they are applicable to all epithelia and, in some instances to nonepithelial cells as well; and 2) to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms responsible for epithelial absorptive and secretory processes in vivo.
